Previews are high resolution jpeg images that load quickly from the Browser to the Viewer, they can be dragged & dropped not only into the iWork & iLife applications but also to Motion, Final Cut Pro, Finder, Adobe GoLive & most other applications which support jpegs. The resolution is high enough to use them on the internet.
When you first upgrade to Aperture 1.5 you will be given a chance to "Create previews for existing images" you can always opted out & leave this unchecked for greater control of the Previews & do this later after the upgrade.

Should you opt out & want to have greater control to create Previews of your photographs you use the Preferences window Command , (Command comma) within Aperture. At the bottom of the Preferences window you'll notice the new Preview presets where you select the quality, preview size etc.
